Biography
of Schuyler Brown
Schuyler
Brown was born in 1930 in New York City, where he attended
the Buckley School. Upon completing his college preparatory
course at the Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, Dr.
Brown matriculated at Harvard University, where he received
an A.B. in Classical Languages in 1952.
That same
year he entered the Jesuit order, where he was ordained to
the priesthood (1963) and received licentiates in philosophy
(1957), theology (1964), and Biblical studies (1969). He also
taught Latin and Greek at Xavier High School in New York City
(1957-1960).
In 1965
Dr. Brown matriculated at the University of Muenster (Westphalia),
where he was awarded the degree of Dr. Theol. (1969) for his
dissertation Apostasy and Perseverance in the Theology
of Luke (Analecta Biblica, 36); Rome: Pontifical Biblical
Institute, 1969).
Dr. Browns
first academic appointment was in 1969 at his alma mater,
Woodstock College, which was just in the process of moving
from Maryland to New York City. In 1973, following the announcement
of Woodstocks closure, he accepted an appointment at
the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where he
served for five years (1973-1978).
He then
accepted an invitation by the University of London (Heythrop
College) to be Visiting Lecturer (1978-1980), after which
he joined the University of Toronto (St. Michaels College)
as Professor of New Testament. There he was cross-appointed
to the Centre for Religious Studies and the Department of
Near Eastern Studies.
In 1982
Dr. Brown was admitted to the Anglican diocese of Toronto
and assigned, as Assistant Priest, to the Church of St. Augustine
of Canterbury, where he started a programme in Adult Education.
Since 1997 he has served as Priest in Charge at the Church
of the Good Shepherd.
Since
his retirement from the University, Dr. Brown has remained
active in the School of Continuing Studies and is also Lecturer
at the Jung Institute in Zurich and in the Training Programme
of The Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts.
In addition
to his dissertation, Dr. Brown has published two other books:
The Origins of Christianity: A Historical Introduction
to the New Testament (Oxford University Press, 1984; revised
edition, 1993) and Text and Psyche: Experiencing Scripture
Today (New York: Continuum, 1998); paperback edition (Wilmette,
Illinois: Chiron, 2002). He has also published many articles
and reviews in scholarly journals.
Dr. Brown
studies piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music and is a
member of the Taoist Tai Chi Society. Since 1984 he has been
married to Margaret Eileen Meredith, a graduate of the Jung
Institute in Zurich and a practicing Jungian analyst in Toronto.
